In the four years of living and working abroad I had allowed my work to be my key focus.  My life really consisted of waking up, going to the office, and then coming home or meeting friends for dinner and the occasional or often drink 😊.  I can say however that when it comes to walking I was way more active than when I lived in the SF bay area because I did not own a car.

Way to often I said to myself “Maggie today is the day you are going to go out and sign up at the gym, or Maggie you love to swim so join that swim club and start doing those laps, or Maggie you love yoga why don’t you sign up for that yoga studio.”  And at many points in my life I have actually joined that gym, signed up at that pool, or joined that yoga studio and more often that not – I did NOT go!  When I reflect on why – there are so many reasons or at least every time I did not go – I had a reason. There have been times in my life where I have been better at getting to the gym and making exercise a priority – however even when I did this I did not always see the results I wanted – i.e. dropping the pounds.  No matter what I did or how often I went the weight still stayed with me.  So fast forward to the whole point of this post.

Recently I have come to a crossroads in my life in which I made the decision to take some time to fully focus on my health and wellbeing.  My work contract has ended in China and I have decided to take some time to focus on myself.  That said, I have been under a tremendous amount of stress leading up to this point and honestly have not been feeling good about my fitness level, weight, and choices I had been making when it comes to taking care of me.  I had thought about getting a personal trainer for sometime but was scared and intimidated to take that first step.

Through sheer determination I took that first step and made an appointment to check out Prime Fitness in Shanghai China (  I entered the gym and met with Denis Couprie the General Manager and as it had been a bit of an emotional day I burst into tears after the first few minutes we were talking.  As embarrassing as that seemed he did not blink an eye and after a bit of a chat he just encouraged me to come back and meet with the master trainer he thought would be a good match for me.  Needless to say William (my trainer) was a great fit and my fitness journey began.  The best thing about Prime Fitness for me was that all the exercise we did was stuff I could do at home on my own and I was able to reconnect with my body and slowly feel stronger, increase my stamina, and most of all be amazed at what I could do 😊 while completely being supported and encouraged by my trainer.  I had a partner on this first part of my fitness journey and each session provided more and more inspiration to continue the journey.

I guess the whole point to this post is to share my initial journey to reconnect with my body and to encourage everyone out there to consider getting a personal trainer if you can to help you jumpstart your fitness activity.  If you have thought about getting a personal trainer but have put it off, or if you think it costs too much, or if you just feel intimidated to jump back in… don’t wait just do it!  Life is too short to put off something so important as taking care of your health and there are so many people out there ready to support you in the journey.

Big thanks and shout out to the Prime team and especially the best trainer out there William (!
